Japan

Arrived in Tokyo today after 11.5 hours on the plane. Really tired and it's 31 degrees. But my impression of Japan is really positive. We've just had great sushi in a tiny sushi bar opposite our accommodation. Really nice people running the resteraunt and we could communicate just well enough to really have a nice time.

Tip #1: Make sure you have already obtained Yen before flying into Japan. And if you haven't then do not do anything else in the airport until you have obtained some. We couldn't find any obvious ATMs in the airport (although we were told that they are there) so thought we would go to Tokyo where there would be many ATMs. We should have just exchanged the pounds I was carrying. On the train finally reading the guidebook we realised that most ATMs in Tokyo do not work with cards from overseas. And indeed this is the case and it took us 25 minutes of searching and asking to finally get directions to an useable ATM.
Tip #2: Don't think you can rely on your Visa or Mastercard because actually the Japanese use cash for most everything.
